Airlines that allow large dogs in the cabin (and what to do if yours is too big)

No major US or Canadian airline lets a large pet dog ride in the cabin. If your dog doesn't fit in a carrier under the seat, your realistic options are one European airline, a dog charter, or the hold.

Key facts

  • No major US or Canadian airline lets a large pet dog ride in the cabin.
  • ITA Airways has carried dogs up to 30 kg in the cabin on some Italian domestic flights since August 3, 2026.
  • BARK Air and K9 Jets charter fares start around $7,000 to $8,000 one way.
  • Alaska and Hawaiian fly dogs in the hold for $200 each way, up to 150 lb with kennel.

The scheduled airline that does: ITA Airways

Italy's ITA Airways became the first major European airline to sell cabin space for large dogs, with flights from August 3, 2026. The rules, from ITA's own page:

  • Dogs up to 30 kg (66 lb), on selected domestic flights within Italy only.
  • You buy two tickets: one for you and one for the space your dog takes. The dog lies on a mat on the floor, not on the seat.
  • A muzzle, a leash and a crash-tested harness clipped to the seat belt are required.
  • At most two large dogs per flight, and the dog must be at least 6 months old with pet liability insurance.
  • Booking is by phone through ITA's contact center, at least 4 days before the flight.

It's a sign of where things may go in Europe. Italy's aviation authority changed its rules in 2025 to let airlines carry dogs over 10 kg in the cabin under an approved plan, but other airlines haven't followed yet.

Dog charters: BARK Air and K9 Jets

If you're flying long distance with a big dog, dog-focused charters are the only way to keep it beside you. They're expensive, and flights only go when enough seats sell.

ServiceHow it worksSample fares
BARK AirPublic charter flights operated for BARK. No crates and no size or breed limits. One ticket covers a dog and one person, or two dogs under about 50 lb combined.New York to Los Angeles $7,075; New York to London $9,900; New York to Paris $10,225 (listed fares for 2027 dates)
K9 JetsSeats on shared private jets. Pets ride uncrated in the cabin with no breed or weight limits. One pet over 51 lb or two under 50 lb per booking. From $7,925 (Dublin or New Jersey) to $13,850 (Los Angeles)

JSX, a semi-private airline in the US West, has also let larger dogs fly leashed on the cabin floor when you buy the seat next to you. We couldn't load its pet page to confirm the current weight limit and fee, so check jsx.com before planning around it.

The hold: bigger dogs, lower cost

Flying in the baggage hold costs a few hundred dollars instead of thousands, but very few airlines still offer it to regular travelers:

Hold travel has seasonal temperature limits, and most airlines refuse snub-nosed breeds such as bulldogs, boxers and pugs in the hold. Read flying a pet in cargo before you book.

Service dogs are different

Under US Department of Transportation rules, a trained service dog may fly in the cabin, in the floor space at your seat, without a carrier. Airlines can ask for DOT forms covering the dog's health, behavior and training, and can refuse a dog too large to fit in your foot space. Emotional support animals don't qualify and must travel as pets.

How to choose

  • Flying within Italy: ITA Airways, if your dog is under 30 kg.
  • Flying within the US with a dog under 150 lb with kennel: Alaska or Hawaiian in the hold is the cheapest option, outside the temperature limits.
  • Flying long distance with a snub-nosed or anxious dog: a charter like BARK Air or K9 Jets, if the budget allows.
  • Moving and not in a hurry: a professional pet transport company or a road trip may be kinder and cheaper.
